This year Carol Ann Duffy became the first female Poet Laureate and dedicated her appointment to women poets everywhere. To celebrate this and National Poetry Day come and hear Elizabeth Barret, Liz Cashdan, Debjani Chatterjee, Nell Farrell, Sally Goldsmith, Geraldine Monk, Ann Sansom and River Wolton read from their work.

07/10/09 Poetry Workshop
It’s National Poetry day on Thursday 8th October, so why not take the plunge and try your hand at writing a poem? Wakefield poet Michael Yates will be at Horbury Library from 2pm until 4pm to help you chime with the rhymes, roll out the rhythms and work on the words. It’s fun! It’s free! Michael Yates, who lives in Sandal, has been Poet in Residence at Wakefield Hospitals, Wakefield Cathedral and in Whitby and has published three volumes of verse. His play “Til my eyes bleed” has just completed runs in Wakefield and Leeds and is being performed at Ilkley Festival later this year. Another play “Life sentence” won an award at the annual Sheffield One-Act Play Festival in June.

18/10/09 SLAMbassadors - Slam Poetry Competition
Got a way with words? Write & perform poetry? Rap? Spoken word? BBC Blast has teamed up with the Poetry Society to challenge all budding performers to write and perform an original 60 second slam poem on the theme of identity: who you are, where you come from, cultural, national, human identity...
